Columbia Backpacks for Outdoor Style

The trail to Columbia backpacks started with a hat company. Gert Boyle’s parents fled the turmoil in Europe in 1938 and settled in Portland, Oregon, where the Columbia River inspired the company name.

Focusing on high quality performance products for all outdoor activities, the expanding business became the Columbia Sportswear Company in 1960.

A family-run affair, Gert Boyle took over in 1970 and stamped her “One Tough Mother” personality on products ranging from clothing to footwear and the famous Gore-Tex parkas.

After celebrating over 70 years of experience in designing and testing products in the Pacific Northwest, Columbia stands as a well known global brand of excellence for anything needed for the outdoors.

Environmental and Social Responsibility

At Columbia Sportswear, corporate responsibility means that innovative products must not only create financial results, but social ones too. This is achieved through responsible sourcing of materials, giving back to communities and reducing environmental impacts.

The Global Donation Program provides support for both large-scale and small-scale efforts in environmental conservation, outdoor education and community involvement.

The company supports organizations working to conserve the outdoors, including the American Hiking Society, Ducks Unlimited and The Conservation Alliance; to improve outdoor knowledge and skills, including Islandwood and the Skin Cancer Foundation; and to empower communities where they manufacture products, through the Mercy Corps, Children’s Healing Art Project and Schoolhouse Supplies program.

And the Rethreads program takes irregular garments and extends their life by recycling the items to needy groups.

Columbia Treeline
(School, Outdoors, Travel – 1892ci/31L)

With a streamlined design that keeps the load light and not bulky, the Treeline combines good capacity with durability for an attractive and functional option.

There are two main compartments for a day of hiking or a full day on campus with plenty of storage space for gear or books. A fleece-lined top pocket also keeps your sunglasses or sensitive gadgets scratch-free, but there is no audio port.

On the sides are two mesh water bottle pockets that fit quart-sized containers. There are no side storage pockets. The front panel has a bungee cord for extra storage for stashing a jacket and especially convenient to separate out wet gear.

The pack has a protective layer made with the Omni-Shield Advanced Repellency, a barrier that resists light rain and stains to keep your bag clean and dry inside.

Current users gave positive marks for the sleek design, good capacity and thick shoulder straps that lug books all day on campus or takes the abuse of everyday use at middle school.

Colors available: Black, Black/Pool, Red Hot/Dark Charcoal

Columbia Bugaboo Cyberpack
(School, Travel – 1465ci/24L)

First, the color choices are vivid and attractive to capture anyone’s attention. Second, the Bugaboo comes with a padded external laptop pocket that keeps it separate from the rest of the load.

The main compartment handles your books, binders and clothes and the two mesh side pockets are big enough for quart-sized containers.

With contoured shoulder straps and a sternum strap, the pack fits and wears well. Plus the overall capacity is small and limits the carry load to a minimum of essential items, a good option for those seeking a lighter pack.

The exterior fabric contains the Omni-Shield advanced repellency for water and stain resistance. On some occassions, users did tend to run out of room due to the limited capacity.

Colors available: Black, Black/Dark Charcoal, Black/State Orange, Dark Charcoal/Pool, Bonsai/Black, Neon Green/Black, Pool/Malibu

A lightweight and lower capacity pack with a padded laptop pocket that sparkles in snazzy color choices.

Some users particularly liked the color choices and used the backpack to store a digital SLR camera and a laptop in the hydration sleeve without any fuss. Still need more reviews to make any judgements about durability or other concerns.
